Medical assistant and pharmacy technician careers offer good wages, low unemployment rates, and the opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives.

If training to become a medical assistant or pharmacy technician after graduating high school next year sounds exciting to you, Bay Area Medical Academy in partnership with STEP into a Job!™ is encouraging students to apply for one of three high school scholarships to kick start a successful healthcare career.

What Does a Medical Assistant Do?

A medical assistant plays an important and versatile role in providing people with quality healthcare, helping patients feel at ease, and assisting physicians clinical and administrative duties.

An entry-level medical assistant can expect to perform a variety of duties and responsibilities, such as:

Administrative Work (front office)

• Entering patient information into medical records
• Scheduling patient appointments
• Recording patient history and personal information
• Answering and making phone calls
• Verifying insurance eligibility and benefits
• Processing authorizations for HMO and Medicare office visits

Clinical Work (back office)

• Checking patients in and out
• Measuring vital signs
• Assisting the physician with patient examinations
• Administering patient injections or medications as directed by the physician
• Blood draws (if CPT-1 certified)
• Preparing blood samples for laboratory tests
• Performing EKGs

An entry-level medical assistant can expect to find work within medical facilities, such as:

• Primary or specialty care physician’s offices
• Hospitals
• Outpatient clinics
• Nursing care facilities
• Medical research centers
• Community health centers

What Does a Pharmacy Technician Do?

An entry-level pharmacy technician can expect to begin their career working in a retail pharmacy assisting a pharmacist with a variety of duties and responsibilities, such as:

• Providing customers with friendly, fast, and efficient service
• Filling prescriptions by retrieving, counting, and pouring drugs
• Prescription labeling
• Compounding specialty medications
• Distributing medications to patients
• Inventory control
• Unpacking, checking, and storing shipments of supplies
• Processing claims for shortages, overages, and damages in
  shipments
• Returning outdated and overstocked merchandise
• Handling phone inquiries

After gaining experience working at a retail pharmacy, a licensed pharmacy technician can explore some of these career possibilities:

• Expanding on your pharmacy technician knowledge and progressing to working within specialized clinical pharmacies, e.g. at Walgreens Pharmacy, CVS Pharmacy
• Store management training programs, e.g. at Walgreens Pharmacy
• Working in hospitals
• Working in a mail order pharmacy
• Working in a veterinary hospital pharmacy
• With extra schooling, training to become a pharmacist

Applying for Bay Area Medical Academy’s 2018 High School Scholarships

What scholarships are available?

Bay Area Medical Academy is offering three full scholarships to 2018 graduating high school seniors for healthcare career training.*

• Scholarship #1: Medical Assisting Program Scholarship (with phlebotomy and EKG) at the BAMA San Francisco campus.
• Scholarship #2: Pharmacy Technician Program Scholarship at the BAMA San Francisco campus.
• Scholarship #3: Medical Assisting Program Scholarship (with phlebotomy and EKG) at the BAMA San Jose campus.

*Part of the funding will be provided through a student Federal Pell Grant.

What are the scholarship eligibility requirements?

You must:

• Be a 2018 graduating high school senior
• Live and go to school in the San Francisco Bay Area
• Have a minimum 2.0 GPA
• Submit a 150-300 word personal essay titled: ‘Why I Want To Work In Healthcare’

What is the scholarship application deadline?

Your scholarship applications must be submitted by Tuesday, May 1st, 2018.

How are scholarship awardees selected?

Scholarship awardees will be selected on the basis of meeting the eligibility requirements and their personal essay. Awardees will be notified on Tuesday, May 15th, 2018.
