Phlebotomy Training at BAMA

phlebotomy trainingWhat happens after you enroll in Bay Area Medical Academy’s phlebotomy training course?

Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of what you can expect, from your phlebotomy classroom training to becoming a California Certified Phlebotomy Technician I.

Your Step-by-Step Guide to Phlebotomy Training at Bay Area Medical Academy

Step #1: Classroom Training

Bay Area Medical Academy offers phlebotomy training in San Francisco and San Jose, with day, evening, and weekend classes scheduled throughout the year.

The classroom training consists of 60-hours of lectures and practical instruction, including both a theoretical foundation in phlebotomy and hands-on training such as venipuncture and skin puncture procedures.

Step #2: Phlebotomy Technician (NCPT) Certification Exam

After you’ve completed your phlebotomy classroom training, it’s time to sign up for the Phlebotomy Technician (NCPT) Certification Exam offered by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).

Note: there is a 2-week mandatory waiting period from your last day to class until you take the Phlebotomy Technician (NCPT) Certification Exam at the school.

Step #3: Externship Requirements

Once you pass the Phlebotomy Technician (NCPT) Certification Exam, it’s time to turn in your externship requirements, such as an official transcript from your high school or college.

Step #4: Practice Labs

Next your Externship Coordinator schedules you for 3 practice labs at the school. After successfully completing those practice labs, it’s time for your clinical externship.

Step #5: Externship

On your phlebotomy externship, you’ll work as a Phlebotomist at a healthcare facility.

Your externship gives you the opportunity to hone your phlebotomy technique, learn new ways of working, and interact with healthcare professionals and patients.

At the end of your externship, you’ll be an improved and more-rounded Phlebotomist.

Step #6: Graduation

Having successfully completed your phlebotomy externship, you have now graduated the Phlebotomy Technician Course.

Next the school submits your externship packet and Bay Area Medical Academy Certificate of Completion to National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).

Two-to-four weeks later, you’ll receive your NCCT Certificate of Completion in the mail.

You can then schedule your California Certified Phlebotomy Technician I Certificate Application appointment with the school.

Step #7: California Certified Phlebotomy Technician I Certificate Application

Bay Area Medical Academy helps you submit your California Certified Phlebotomy Technician I Certificate application with the California Department of Public Health – Laboratory Field Services Division

The California Department of Public Health processes certificates in up to 90 days.

Once your California Certified Phlebotomy Technician I Certificate arrives in the mail – congratulations, you are a certified Phlebotomist!

You are now licensed to work as a Phlebotomist in the state of California.
