Free* 3-in-1 Medical Assisting With Phlebotomy and EKG Class – Sponsored by UCSF for San Francisco Residents

The Class

This free* Medical Assisting with Phlebotomy and EKG class is intended to provide the entry level student with a solid foundation in clinical and administrative duties to prepare for a successful entry into the medical field. The program consists of three components: administrative skills training, clinical skills training, and a clinical externship. The program is divided into eight learning units called modules. The first seven modules are classroom modules taught in hybrid mode. Following the successful completion of the first seven modules, students participate in a 200-240 hour clinical externship.

*Although the program is free, applicants will be required to complete FAFSA.

Graduates of the program will:

  • Demonstrate compassion and respect for the human dignity and rights of all individuals.
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform clinical assisting and laboratory procedures.
  • Utilize critical thinking and decision-making skills when providing clinical and administrative services in healthcare settings.
  • Apply legal concepts to the medical practice.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, co-workers, and providers.
  • Participate in professional activities and continuing education.
  • Potential entry-level job titles include Medical Office Assistant/Hospital Assistant (31-9092), EKG Technician (29-2031), Medical Receptionist (43-6013,) Phlebotomist (31-9097), and Health Support Workers-All Other (31-9099)*.

Eligibility Requirements

  • San Francisco Resident – This program is designed for locals in the San Francisco area.
  • High School Diploma or GED – A completed high school education is required (please note: individuals with a bachelor’s degree or higher are not eligible).
  • Vaccinated for COVID-19 – You must have received at least one full course of COVID-19 vaccination (this includes the complete bivalent vaccine or the updated 2023-2024 single-dose vaccine).
