Bay Area Medical Academy takes pride in working with students from all backgrounds and experience levels. That includes individuals with some professional experience as medical assistants. Our Medical Assistant Refresher Course is designed for mid-career and returning professionals who want to update their skills and certifications. It’s also built with your specific career goals, experience, and knowledge in mind.
Many people with experience can qualify for Bay Area Medical Academy’s Medical Assistant Refresher Course. For simplicity’s sake, we can break it down into three categories, or groups, of healthcare professionals:
Some of our students left the healthcare profession years ago but are now interested in returning. For these individuals, we provide a program that allows them to update their skills and recertify.
Medical assistants don’t have to be certified in California, but the ones that are have higher earning potential. If you’ve been working in an MA position, you can use that experience to fast-track your certifications and your career with us.
Put your foreign credentials to great use in the U.S. healthcare system. If you’ve worked as a doctor, nurse, medical assistant, or other professional abroad, we can translate those skills through credits towards our nationally recognized program.
The specific approach that we will take for your program will depend on your unique circumstances. The refresher course will typically place you in one of the more advanced parts of our curriculum. There’s also a 200-hour externship that all students must take to qualify for their certification.
We offer 3 certifications. Each one is open to medical refresher students and include:
National Certified Medical Assistant
Certified EKG Technician, CET
California Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT-1) / National Certified Phlebotomy Technician (through the National Center for Competency Testing for Phlebotomy; mandatory for California State CPT-1 Licensing)
The duration, cost, and specific curriculum of your individualized medical assistant refresher course will depend on the results of an evaluation by an admissions representative.
Medical assistant refresher course placement is determined on a case-by-case basis. The following process is intended to help guide us and make the right decisions about your individualized program.
During this interview, we’ll discuss your history, work background, education, and overall career goals. This is also a great opportunity for you to ask questions about the field to determine if the MA career path is right for you.
To receive credit for work experience or foreign skills, we will need documentation. That can include:
Lapsed or expired certificates
Foreign certification paperwork
Statements from your employer
Credits from other schools
Any verifiable documentation that proves prior medical assistant work experience
With this information in hand, we’ll have a better picture of how your experience aligns with our curriculum.
We will evaluate all of your documentation as well as your reported history in the interview, and ask for completion of practice tests and skill assessments. All of this information will help us better understand what specific courses from our MA program would be best for you.
We’ll then create a program based on your desired schedule, whether it be morning, day, or evening classes. The decision will also be based on how many certifications you’ve decided to pursue. Our approach to every student is to build a plan that helps you meet your career goals quickly and completely—even after you graduate.
While we can’t guarantee job placement, we do work with a wide range of area employers. Many of our graduates also receive offers of full-time employment through our externships. Some employers that we work with include:
If you’re considering returning to the medical assistant profession or want to improve your existing skills, our medical assistant refresher course is a great option! We put together a fully customized learning plan to make the most of your existing knowledge while filling any gaps that hold back your full potential.

Recognition by employers nationwide
What I liked most about the medical assisting program is the hands-on learning. Mrs. Earby made it fun, and she told us about her real-life experience working as a medical assistant. I always looked forward to going to class. BAMA helped me reach my goal, and shaped me to be the best medical assistant I could be. I’m now an medical assistant at San Francisco Critical Care Medical Group.
